Artists Extend GRAMMY Limelight and Score New Round of Gold and Platinum Awards

WASHINGTON –Capitol star and GRAMMY nominee and performer Katy Perry received the top spot for most Gold & Platinum certifications in February, according to the Recording Industry Association of America’s (RIAA) monthly G&P count.  Her first studio album One of the Boys certified Platinum, while two of her two digital singles “Hot N Cold” and “I Kissed A Girl” reached triple Platinum prestige, totaling more than seven million units sold!

Loosely dubbed the “GRAMMY effect,” quadruple-winning rapper Lil Wayne saw a February sales bump on his summer release after the 51st annual ceremony.  Tha Carter, Vol. 3 was certified 3x-Platinum and remains the highest-selling of his Cash Money career thus far.  Likewise, the top digital single certification in February -- Gold, Platinum and triple Platinum-- went to GRAMMY song of the year “Viva la Vida” by Coldplay.  Nominated in the same category was Atlantic artist Jason Mraz who sold two million downloads of “I’m Yours” to earn a shiny double-Platinum award.  “I’m Yours” is off Mraz’ Platinum certified album We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. We go Platinum.

Also adding to the glow of GRAMMY recognition, Ne -Yo’s Year of the Gentleman (Def Jam) certified Gold and Platinum after hit track “Miss Independent” earned songwriters Mikkel S. Eriksen, T.E. Hermansen and S. Smith the prize for best R&B song.  Proving hyphenated names bring one good luck, all three of Ne-Yo’s studio albums have earned Platinum plaques.

The RIAA presented Geffen veterans Guns N’ Roses both Gold and Platinum awards for their highly anticipated first commercial release in fifteen years, Chinese Democracy.  The album is testament to fans’ loyalty to GNR, whose career sales have reached 43.5 million since grouping in Los Angeles in 1985. GNR 4 Eva!

Six newly minted stars earned their very first RIAA-certified Gold album awards in February.  Topping the list was British bombshell and best new artist GRAMMY winner Adele for her debut success 19 (Columbia).  Also three country artists: Lady Antebellum, Darius Rucker and Steve Holy whose respective debut albums Lady Antebellum (Capitol Nashville), Learn to Live (Capitol Nashville) and Blue Moon (Curb) brought home the Gold.  And last but never least The Gap Band’s former lead singer Charlie Wilson and industry veteran Tom Waits also earned themselves a Gold album for Charlie, Last Name Wilson (Jive) and Orphans (Anti/Epitaph), respectively. Kudos to all!

Alternative music fans were down with digital downloads in February, securing Evanescence and Saving Abel premiere Platinum digital certs for their respective hit tracks “Call Me When You’re Sober” (Wind-Up Records) and “Addicted” (Virgin).  Additionally, sizzling Capitol rapper Mims solidified his hotness by receiving his first Gold & Platinum shout out for “This is Why I’m Hot.”  Mims is set to release his second studio album entitled Guilt this year.

On the heels of her second album release It's Not Me, It's You, “Smile” off U.K. native Lily Allen’s debut Capitol release was certified Gold.  Also grinning for taking home their first Gold single certs are fellow Atlantic artists Zac Brown Band for “Chicken Fried” and O.A.R. for “Shattered” (Atlantic).  Two more debut Golds went to folk-rocker Matt Nathanson for “Come On Get Higher” (Vanguard) and Cuban rapper Pitbull for “Krazy” (The Orchard).

Hit ringtone “Paralyzer” from Finger Eleven’s fifth album Them vs. You vs. Me stunned fans while ringing in Platinum, and reggae/pop music sensation Sean Kingston took home a Gold mastertone award for “Take You There.”  

In February, the RIAA awarded a total 19 albums, 31 digital singles and 2 ringtones.  All certifications are calculated by Gelfand, Rennert & Feldman.  Complete lists of all album, single, mastertone and video awards can also be accessed at www.riaa.com.
