Washington, DC – In an effort to raise awareness of the positive role music often plays in addressing mental health issues, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) today announces a new alliance with mpower, a youth awareness program of the National Mental Health Association (NMHA). The RIAA will support the efforts of NMHA as they prepare to launch mpower in the coming months.
Mpower: musicians for mental health, works with artists and leaders in the music industry to reach out to youth about mental health and substance abuse issues. Mpower intends to utilize public service announcements, concert tie-ins, special events, Web-based outreach, and educational forums in the program.
“RIAA and NMHA are committed to raising awareness about the ways in which music can be used to educate the public about mental health,” said Hilary Rosen, Chairman and CEO of the RIAA. “We are very excited about the possibilities this alliance will bring.”
“With mpower, NMHA seeks to use the power of music to cut through the stigma that surrounds mental health issues and to encourage youth to seek help for themselves or a friend when necessary, said Michael M. Faenza, NMHA President & CEO. “We look forward to working with RIAA to address one of the most significant health issues affecting youth today.”
Similarly, the RIAA’s Parental Advisory Program encourages dialogue about difficult issues.
“At the very heart of our Parental Advisory Labeling Program is the idea of allowing creative expression to thrive while telling parents that an artists’ lyrics may be explicit, and encourages caregivers to talk with their kids about the lyrics they hear,” said Rosen.
