Recording Industry Announces November Awards

Diamonds are Forever for Led Zeppelin; Eagles’ “Greatest Hits” and “The Bodyguard” Soundtrack are Best-Sellers

Washington, DC - Led Zeppelin becomes only the third act in music history to achieve four or more Diamond® albums, according to the Recording Industry Association of America’s November awards announcement. Led Zeppelin follows the lead of another supergroup, the Beatles, who have five Diamond® albums. Garth Brooks has four Diamond® titles. This month, “Led Zeppelin IV” advances to 22 million sales; “Led Zeppelin II” moves up to 12 million and “Houses Of The Holy” climbs to 11 million. The band’s 1975 double-album “Physical Graffiti” holds at 15 million.

As reported earlier this month by the RIAA, the Eagles’ “Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975” reaches sales of 26 million, pulling ahead of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” to become the highest certified album of all time. “Thriller” remains at 25 million.

“The Bodyguard” soundtrack, the best-selling soundtrack of all time, hits the 17 million mark, which makes it the best-selling album of the 1990’s. Tied in second place as the decade’s best-sellers, with sales of 16 million each, are Garth Brooks’ “No Fences,” Hootie & The Blowfish’s “Cracked Rear View” and Alanis Morissette’s “Jagged Little Pill.”

The two top-selling albums of the year are running in a neck and neck race. The Backstreet Boys’ “Millennium” and Britney Spears’ “...Baby One More Time” are both certified at the nine million sales level. Both albums are on Jive Records.

Ricky Martin’s “Ricky Martin” is certified at six million, setting a new record for an album by a performer of Latin heritage. Santana’s “Supernatural” is close behind with certified sales of five million. Santana’s album is the band’s all-time best seller, eclipsing sales of their 1970 classic “Abraxas.”

Shania Twain’s “Come On Over” jumps to the 14 million level, a total topped by only one country album in history - Garth Brooks’ “No Fences.” Two other top female country stars hit the four million mark in November. Faith Hill has her first quadruple-Platinum® seller for “Faith” and Reba McEntire has her second with “For My Broken Heart.”

Garth Brooks, aka Chris Gaines, reaches double-Platinum® with, “In The Life Of Chris Gaines.” The last time RIAA certified an artist’s alter ego was for David Bowie’s “The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust” which went Gold® in 1974.

Tim McGraw’s “A Place In The Sun,” voted Album of the Year in September by the Country Music Association, is double-Platinum®. George Strait’s “Clear Blue Sky,” a previous winner of the award, is triple-Platinum® this month.

Andrea Bocelli’s “Romanza” advances to three million, moving into in a tie with the Three Tenors’ 1990 collaboration, “In Concert,” as the top-selling album ever by a classical artist.

Celine Dion’s “Let’s Talk About Love” reaches Diamond® status at 10 million sales. It is Dion’s second Diamond® award title after “Falling Into You.” Only two other female solo artists -- Shania Twain and Mariah Carey -- have reached Diamond® status with back-to back studio albums.

‘Tis the season -- Johnny Mathis’ 1958 album, “Merry Christmas,” is certified at the five million mark, becoming one of the six best-selling holiday albums of all time. Kenny G’s “Miracles-The Holiday Album” tops the list at eight million, followed by Elvis Presley’s “Elvis’ Christmas Album” at six million. Tied with Mathis are Mannheim Steamroller’s “Mannheim Steamroller Christmas” and “A Fresh Aire Christmas” and Barbra Streisand’s “A Christmas Album.”

Two Gold® and two Platinum® music video awards were certified in November. Ricky Martin’s “The Ricky Martin Video Collection” from Columbia Records hit the Platinum® mark at 100,000 units.

The RIAA awarded a total of 43 Multi-Platinum™, 20 Platinum® and 31 Gold® albums during November. All certifications are calculated by Gelfand, Rennert & Feldman. A complete list of all audio and music video awards may be accessed at www.riaa.com.
