Washington, D.C. (December 15, 2020) On December 10, President-elect Joe Biden announced that he intends to nominate Katherine Tai as the U.S. Trade Representative, a Cabinet-level position responsible for the new Administration’s trade policy development, negotiations and enforcement. Tai currently serves as the House Committee on Ways and Means Chief Trade Counsel. Prior to joining Ways and Means, she served in the USTR General Counsel’s Office, including as the Chief Counsel for China Trade Enforcement, where she led USTR’s WTO litigation efforts involving China. RIAA’s CEO Mitch Glazier issued the following statement in response to this announcement:

“RIAA applauds President-elect Biden’s choice of Katherine Tai as his nominee for U.S. Trade Representative. Katherine is a deeply knowledgeable trade expert whose extensive first-hand experience with the Ways and Means Committee and at USTR will put the new Administration in an extremely strong position to advance a forward-looking trade agenda to benefit all Americans. She is incredibly skilled at navigating the rugged terrain of both international trade negotiations and Congressional political realities, and has demonstrated a consistent willingness to hear all sides in an effort to find common ground. As a champion of trade policy as a ‘force for good’ as well as a defender of American economic security through trade enforcement, she will bring incredible insight and leadership to the agency. RIAA heartily congratulates Katherine on her nomination and welcomes her back to USTR where she first started her government career.
