RIAA Statement on USTR’s 2020 Review of Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy Report

Washington, D. C. (January 15, 2021) Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier made the following statement today in response to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) 2020 Review of Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy (the Notorious Markets List) report:

“USTR’s latest findings in its Notorious Markets Report continues to underscore the importance of both government and industry working together to reduce piracy and protect creators’ rights.

“As stated, ‘commercial-scale copyright piracy and trademark counterfeiting cause significant financial losses for U.S. right holders and legitimate businesses, undermine critical U.S. comparative advantages in innovation and creativity to the detriment of American workers, and pose significant risks to consumer health and safety.’

“Strong copyright protection and enforcement, particularly with respect to online markets, is critical to ensuring consumers protection and creators’ ability to thrive. We appreciate the steadfast work of Ambassador Robert Lighthizer and his team and applaud USTR’s support of intellectual property rights protection and enforcement.”
