RIAA Welcomes U.S. Government “Notorious Markets Report,” Flags Ongoing AI Concerns

WASHINGTON, DC (January 30, 2024) – Today, the United States Trade Representative (USTR) released its annual Notorious Markets Report spotlighting illicit digital and physical markets where pervasive copyright piracy threatens the American music community and other creative sectors.

Recording Industry Association of America® (RIAA) Senior Vice President, International Policy, George York acknowledged the importance of this review and the cost to American consumers and creators of digital and physical piracy. “We thank Ambassador Tai, USTR and the interagency team for this critical report illustrating the multitude of illicit services that steal from American creators. These digital platforms and brick and mortar shops undermine the U.S. comparative advantage to the detriment of American workers and creators, causing significant financial losses and eroding the creative sector’s massive contributions to the U.S. economy – good jobs, wages, and growth.”

“We appreciate the report’s prioritization of thefts that target the music community such as stream-ripping. And we urge a close look in the future at emerging piracy challenges presented by AI, including the widespread illegal use of copyrighted sound recordings and artist names, images, and likenesses to generate invasive and unlawful voice clones and deepfakes.”
