RIAA Statement on United States Trade Representative 2023 Special 301 Report

Washington, DC (April 27, 2023) – Yesterday, the US Trade Representative released its annual Special 301 Report on the adequacy and effectiveness of US trading partners’ protection and enforcement of IP rights. Reviewing the trade practices of more than 100 nations around the world, the Special 301 Report recognizes, as US Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai stated, that “innovation and creativity are at the heart of American competitiveness” and lays a strong foundation for US government engagement in support of creators around the world.

“RIAA applauds this latest iteration of the US government’s annual review of copyright protection and enforcement around the world and thanks Ambassador Tai and the entire interagency team for their tireless work on this vital survey,” commented RIAA Chairman and CEO Mitch Glazier. “We applaud the Report’s recognition of troubling legislative proposals that would hurt American recording artists and undermine fair trade in music with a number of countries including India and South Africa. And we welcome the addition of Belarus to the Watch List based on its recent law purporting to legalize the unlicensed use of certain copyrighted works.”

RIAA strongly supports the US government’s intensive international engagement to promote creativity and support American creators and jobs through IP dialogue around the world.
